Martial Arts II: Boxing Training

Martial Arts II: Boxing Training

 Published on May 5, 2021

I've been a martial artist for about 15 years now. I started training Muay Thai at 17, which seems like a lifetime ago. While my punches are fairly crisp and powerful I've never been very good as a pure boxer. Training primarily kickboxing styles like Muay Thai and Kun Khmer, many of the fundamental movements in boxing feel awkward or dangerous. Especially the dramatic head movements they employ and the deep, bladed stance they usually prefer. These work wonderfully against punches, but are far easier to exploit if kicks, knees or clinching are allowed.

Even so, there is a place for them in more permissive rulesets like kickboxing or MMA, and I want to get better at them. Here is a video of me trying to move my head in a way that would be helpful for setting up and evading punches, but isn't so dramatic that it's asking to be kicked in the head or leg. It's a tricky balance to strike, but there are some who have mastered it.
