I've always had a penchant and talent for kicking as long as I've been training martial arts (just trying to live up to my surname, I suppose). My technique has changed quite a lot over the years as I've experimented with different variations, and more recently I've been trying to utilize the hip and body rotation without committing as much to a full-body turn. Many of the great fighters in Muay Thai kick this way, whereas the old Boran styles tends to emphasize cutting more horizontally through the target and committing a lot more, with a deep knee bend and complete turn-over the hips.
The advantage of the full-commitment style is mostly that it's harder to counter that style of kick with punches, as your head moves more off the center line and backwards, while your knee, which should be going well past the point of impact, serves as a block against them rushing in. The danger is that it takes a bit more energy, it's a bit slower, and it makes the kick easier to catch. Mastering both is ideal of course. I can now kick without full commitment in a way that still feels quite powerful and natural. I threw a few jumping roundhouses in there for good measure, as those always feel and look nice.
